Who are we?

Ink & Ash Books was born from a simple truth. Stories matter, and they deserve to be found.

As a writer myself, I understand how much time, heart, and sacrifice goes into creating a book. I also know how difficult it can be for independent authors to gain visibility in a crowded industry. Ink & Ash Books exists to bridge that gap. It is a platform where meaningful stories can be shared, supported, and purchased. The name Ink & Ash reflects balance. Ink represents creation, imagination, and the written word. Ash represents what remains after something has burned fiercely. Every book featured here has survived that fire. Every story is chosen with care and intention. Ink & Ash Books is both a curated bookstore and a creative platform. Readers can come here to discover and purchase thoughtfully selected titles. Authors are given the opportunity to have their work championed and respected. We do not stock books simply to fill shelves. We curate stories we genuinely believe in. This is a place for bold voices. For stories that linger long after the final page. For readers who want to support independent authors and trust that every book they purchase carries meaning. Ink & Ash Books is more than a store. It is a meeting point between writers and readers, built on passion, trust, and the belief that the right story will always find its way to the right person.

As well as running a independent bookstore, Jack J Lacey is an author and editor specialising in dark fantasy, speculative fiction, and character-driven stories, so he understands the struggle of finding someone you can trust. His approach is honest, constructive, and detail-oriented. He doesn’t rewrite your book—he helps you sharpen it, strengthen it, and make it unmistakably yours. Whether you’re preparing for querying, self-publishing, or revision, our goal is to help your manuscript reach its full potential.

Choosing an editor is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your manuscript. Your story represents months—sometimes years—of work, creativity, and emotional investment, and it deserves to be handled with care. We approach every manuscript with respect for the writer behind it. Our role is not to impose our voice or reshape your story into something it was never meant to be. Instead, we work to strengthen what is already there—sharpening structure, refining language, and helping your story communicate its full emotional and narrative potential.

As writers ourselves, we understand how vulnerable it can feel to share unfinished work. That understanding shapes the way we edit. Feedback is always honest, but never dismissive; direct, but never discouraging. Every suggestion is grounded in craft and clarity, with clear explanations so you understand not only what needs attention, but why. We focus on actionable, practical edits that help you grow as a writer. Rather than vague comments or surface-level corrections, we aim to give you tools you can apply to future projects as well. Our goal isn’t just to improve one manuscript—it’s to help you develop confidence in your storytelling.
